Generative AI and Scholarly Publishing
Ithaka S+R has conducted several major studies in the past year on the scholarly publishing landscape during a time of rapid technological change. There is no better example of how rapid and radical this pace is than generative AI tools, which have moved from the margins to a focal point of scholarly publishing in little more than one year. The implications for libraries, and for librarians in their support of researchers creating connections and meaning through the usage of emerging generative AI tools, are profound.
In a session at Charleston Conference on Wednesday November 13 at 4pm, speakers will explore the ramifications for librarians and publishers of a new Ithaka S+R study of the strategic implications of generative AI for scholarly publishing. Based on interviews with decision makers from the publishing sector and others with subject expertise, the study examines how generative AI is affecting scholarly communication and publication practices and what new roles publishers may play in a radically transformed information environment. Within this context, this panel will discuss the evolving roles and responsibilities of research libraries in light of this technological revolution.
