While the demographics of the United States are changing, socioeconomic and racial inequities persist. How can our academic and cultural institutions better reflect and serve the communities in which they are situated?
Over the past several years, and in partnership with foundations and member organizations, we have conducted a number of projects to study issues of equity, inclusion, and especially representative diversity. These projects include comprehensive quantitative studies of staff demographics within specific sectors:
In addition, we have conducted qualitative studies, leading to reports, on the strategies some organizations have taken to improve on measures of equity, diversity, and inclusion:
- Funding Socioeconomic Diversity at High Performing Colleges and Universities
- Interrogating Institutional Practices in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Lessons and Recommendations from Case Studies in Eight Art Museums
Our work in this area continues, with a second demographic survey of art museums, a new project to understand staff diversity within scholarly publishing, and our continuing work with the American Talent Initiative.
