The Liberal Arts in Challenging Times
Join us for a conversation on the future of the liberal arts in today’s uncertain and challenging times, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at 11:00 am – 12:30 pm ET. Hear from leaders in higher education as they discuss the value of a liberal arts education and strategies for strengthening it across the higher education sector.
Catharine Bond Hill, managing director of Ithaka S+R and former president of Vassar College, will moderate a panel discussion on how to measure the value of a liberal arts education, how to counter challenges to the liberal arts, and ways to garner support for the liberal arts from policymakers, college and university leadership, and the American public. She will be joined by a distinguished panel of experts:
- Andrew Delbanco, president of the Teagle Foundation and the Alexander Hamilton Professor of American Studies at Columbia University
- Kaye Husbands Fealing, former dean of Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, Georgia Tech
- Lynn Pasquerella, president of the American Association of Colleges and Universities
We’ll also briefly share findings from a recent Ithaka S+R report on the economic value of a liberal arts education, offering compelling insights on defining and measuring the liberal arts as well as its relationship to students’ academic, labor market, and civic outcomes.
We’re grateful for support from the Mellon Foundation, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, (AVDF), and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS).
