While the rapid evolution of generative AI is transforming teaching and learning in higher education, many instructors face this shift without clear frameworks or shared strategies, placing pressure on centers for teaching and learning to develop new programming. This challenge is at the heart of a new Ithaka S+R cohort project in collaboration with the California State University (CSU) system, “Teaching and Learning with AI.”

The project kicked off in September, connecting CSU centers for teaching and learning interested in creating faculty development opportunities for AI with human-centered approaches. The centers will work with Ithaka S+R in developing and sharing models, workshops, and practices that campuses can adopt or adapt. Teams will learn from S+R educators, teaching experts, and each other as they design strategies and assessments for AI programming.

How will the project work?

The project will run through January 2027, with five distinct phases:

  1. Establishing a foundation for collaboration
  2. Incorporating evidence-based teaching practices in the age of AI
  3. Developing faculty programming
  4. Developing assessment tools
  5. Presenting campus models

Project teams will work synchronously and asynchronously to develop their AI pedagogy expertise before designing a specific program for their campus. They will also design a unique set of goals paired with a program assessment in order to determine how their interventions went. Finally, they will share the results of their work with the other teams, creating a record of best practices and a community of practice for further development.

We are excited to be working with nine California State University institutions:

California State University, Dominguez Hills
California State University, Fresno
California State University, Long Beach
California State University, Los Angeles
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
California State University, Sacramento
California State University, San Bernardino
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
San José State University

We look forward to sharing information about the cohort’s process through our blog. In the meantime, if you have questions about this project or are looking for guidance for your campus, please reach out to Michael Fried (michael.fried@ithaka.org).
